Why Prabhu Jagannath pulled Hanuman Ji's tail.
To fulfill the Lord’s wish famous king of the Ganga Dynasty, Ananta Varman Chodaganga Deva built the Jagannath Puri Temple dating back to the 12th century at the seashore Puri. Since then, Lord Jagannath started residing there along with Mata Laxmi, his sister Subhadra and jesth (elder brother) Balabhadra also known as Balaram. As the temple is by the seashore always the roaring sea sound enters the temple premises. And often cyclones and high tides used to head towards Puri.
One day, Subhadra Devi complained to Lord Jagannath that
she cannot bear the roaring sounds coming from the sea. On the other hand,
Varuna Dev (Lord of Ocean) is the father-in-law of Lord Jagannath because Laxmi
Devi is the consort of Lord Jagannath and she emerged from the Sea during
Samudra-Manthana. So out of respect, he cannot tell his father-in-law to stop
the sound. Therefore, he called his sresth bhakt Hanuman and ordered to not
allow the sound of the sea to enter the Jagannath Puri temple. Also ordered him to stop
the sea waters from entering the city and also diverting any cyclones and high
tides heading towards Puri as it would harm his devotees.
One day Hanuman Ji heard that there is some occasion going
on in Ayodhya. So, he was running away from Puri. When Lord Jagannath saw this,
he stopped Hanuman by holding his tail and asked, “Where are you going?”
Hanuman Ji replied, “I am going to Ayodhya. I cannot stay here eating rice,
daal, and sabzi the whole day. There are no fruits or sweets from Maa Sita’s hands.”
For Hanuman, Lord Jagannath became Lord Ramchandra and Laxmi Devi became Maa
Sita. She fed many fruits and sweets to Hanuman. Then lord Jagannath as (Lord
Ramchandra) tied Hanuman with a chain (bedi) to stay in Puri and give him seva.
Since then, Hanuman Ji resides there at the Shree
Mandir, protects the temple, and perform his seva.
He is present as Kanapata Hanuman at the western gate
of Shree Mandir and stops the sea sound from entering the temple. Even today we
cannot hear any sound of sea waves once we enter the Shree Mandir. And as Bedi
Hanuman, he stays in the west protecting the temple and the city from cyclones
and high tides. There he is also known as Daria Mahaveer [Daria means Sea &
Mahaveer is an alternate name for Hanuman]
