Circumcised vs Uncircumcised

Circumcised vs Uncircumcised

Cut it off or keep intact. Which one is better? Well before starting with the topic lets understand in brief what actually circumcision is. “It is the surgical removal of the foreskin of penis”. Many of you might have thought of the question, which one is better “Circumcised or Uncircumcised”. Often these sex related questions come to our mind along with a whole bunch of awkwardness and we hesitate to ask. But once such topics get scientific importance and are explained under the photons of science, the awkwardness curve reduces. I shall not comment on any religious practices regarding circumcision and only talk science.

Starting with a statistical data that about 37-39 % of human male are circumcised. Not a small number, right?

So here are some reasons why you should get circumcised.

  • Less risk of urinary tract infections.
  • A reduced risk of some sexually transmitted disease in men
  • Protection against penile cancer and a lower risk of cervical cancer in female sex partners.
  • Prevention of balanitis (inflammation of glans) and balanoposthitis (inflammation of glans & foreskin)
  • Prevention of phimosis (the inability to retract the foreskin) and paraphimosis (inability to return the foreskin to its original location)

A study in Uganda states the same, where both circumcised and uncircumcised male are copulated with HIV female. And it was seen that circumcised men have a 60 % low risk of being affected with HIV than uncircumcised men. Also, the bacterial growth on the penial head of circumcised men is 80 % less than that of uncircumcised men. This fact was stated by Dr. Price of North Arizona University and figured out the cause that the inner surface of the prepuce (skin covering the penial tip) provides suitable condition for bacterial growth and shows higher chances of inflammation if proper hygiene is not maintained.

Like any other surgical procedure, too there are risks in getting circumcision. Though the risk is low still we should have an idea of the worse. The risks of circumcision include:

  • Pain
  • Risk of bleeding and infection at the site of circumcision
  • Irritation of the glans
  • Higher chances of meatitis (inflammation of the opening of the penis)
  • Risk of injury to penis.

Apart from these temporary risks, the sexual pleasure of a circumcised men is also lowered. The inner membrane of the foreskin consists of many touch receptors. The unique corpuscular receptor of the glans and pudendal nerve serves as a specialized touch sensitive receptor which helps to attain sexual pleasure. And as the foreskin get surgically removed the number of such receptors reduces and thus, lower the pleasure. It has also been noticed that the open penial pore of circumcised men often comes in contact with the undergarments and may lead to frequent premature ejaculation.

Though sexual pleasure has nothing much to do with the reproductive system. But attaining sexual pleasure releases feel-good hormones like endorphins and help to alleviate stress and lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases. And according to some researchers, “the rhythmic nature of sex and sexual stimulation creates a physical-psychological loop of pleasure.” Also, the evolutionary explanations for sexual behavior and orgasm most often posit facilitating reproduction as the primary function (i.e. greater rate of fertilization)

Medical science has not given any final verdict about which is better and the matter is subjective so I would share my opinion about this topic. According to me circumcision can’t be a solution to avoid STDs or other infections. Rather maintaining a proper penial hygiene reduces the risk of infections and using contraceptives would be a better and prominent method of avoiding STDs.
